Have you ever noticed
oil puddles under your MINI after it has been parked for a while? This usually indicates that there is an
oil leak in one of the systems that typically transports oil in your car’s
engine. For example, the
crankshaft has seals to keep oil in, but when these seals break, there can be an oil leak.
While a
crank seal oil leak may not look like a serious problem at first, failure to address it can cause
engine performance issues. In this guide, we will explore how a
crank seal oil leak can affect your MINI’s performance.
The Negative Effects of Crank Seal Oil Leak on MINI’s Performance
If your MINI has a crank seal oil leak, here are some performance issues that can come up, especially if you do not take quick action to fix the leak:
- Poor Engine Performance
The engine is one of the major components in any vehicle, without a working engine, you cannot get your MINI to perform any function. The engine depends on other components and materials for its function, and oil is the important lubrication that keeps parts running smoothly without heat friction. If you lose oil due to a crank seal oil leak, then the engine’s performance can be negatively impacted, leading poor acceleration, stalling, and in worst cases,
engine failure.
2. Engine Overheating
The oil in the engine serves two main purposes—to reduce friction in the engine and to regulate the
engine’s temperature. However, due to crank seal oil leaks, the volume of oil available for these functions in the engine gets lower than normal. As a result, there is no sufficient oil to lubricate moving parts which causes heat friction. Over time, this friction can cause engine components to wear out and also raise the temperature in the engine, causing engine overheating. It is not news that an overheating engine is a poorly performing engine.
3. Poor Fuel Economy
Crank seal oil leaks also affect fuel consumption, thereby affecting fuel economy in the process. With oil leaks, the engine is left with less oil to function with. The result of this is usually increased friction between moving parts and engine overheating. In this case, the engine’s output drops. However, the engine then works even harder to try to supply you with the performance you demand. This extra work increases the need for fuel in the engine; as a result, the car uses more fuel, and this cycle ultimately leads to poor fuel efficiency.
4. Damage to Engine Components
The engine is not always the only victim when it comes to crank seal oil leaks in a vehicle. While the engine can get damaged in the process, other components and systems can also be affected. For example, if oil leaks out of the crankshaft, it can find its way to other engine components like the
timing belt.
Oil contamination on this belt can cause its material to degrade, especially in the presence of heat. This leads to serious damage or failure of the timing belt; other components like the
clutch can also get affected.
